Positive Side Effects of the Economic Crisis
When cash is low, love goes up. The economic crisis might be painful but it has a positive side effect on society. Not focusing on the negative and now redundant and stressful economic considerations of the present financial situation, today I shift attention to the positive impact of scarce liquidity: Creativity, solidarity, understanding, self-confidence, leadership and faith, are just the aspects that I personally celebrate. A re-born keystone of humanity is cutting through the mist of uncertainty. We are rediscovering human values as a collective, and as individuals, we are also experiencing the realities of moral and social values for the first time, not as consumers but as creative beings, sociable and sensitive to things beyond our animal impulse.
The lack of cash is forcing people to communicate more. The need to exchange goods and services leads us to have deeper discussions, trying to find common goals and collaborate on arrangements to help each other. For example, ”Service for service” exchange is increasing. Having no "Easy Money" is making us focus on the individual, rather than the transaction. It’s making us think more about what we consume as well as increasing our perceived value for moral stance, attitude, perseverance, character and principle.
Principles and social values retake their positions as a requirements for survival, they become tangible assets. The cost of opportunity in life becomes less a "Can I afford this?" issue and more about "Is this the right thing to do". The fact that we spend has not changed, the fact that we really think hard about how we spend things, makes all the difference in the world. The wonderful feeling we get from practicing “Solidarity” is not an accident.
Leadership and self confidence: There are no guarantees, this has always been a reality and its never felt as strongly as today. Many entrepreneurs, who are looking at bankruptcy this month or in the next 2 years, remain steadfast in their goals and dreams, encouraging employees, customers and partners. Based on Faith and the human capacity to be creative, a new energy that says "Hey! lets move on, we can do this" is starting to sprought in Guatemala. And those who feel it, transmit it. A natural motivation is being born from nothing but genuine leadership, our own organic and natural capacity to survive as a community, as human beings. Our own, innate, instinct of Faith.
