Rosemberg paid the price of freedom of speech, with his own life, because we permited it.
The strongest evidence of the Rosemberg Case is the price he paid to break the silence. It is we, all Guatemalans, the true murderers of Mr. Rosemberg. It is due to our collective silence, that a man was forced to pay the ultimate price, to say what he had to say. Rosemberg has give us the opportunity of a particularly important freedom; Freedom of Speech. It is now our responsibility to ensure that the highest price for freedom of speech be the request to back up our opinions.
The freedom to say what we believe is true, to ourselves, our community, our society. The opportunity of being confronted with that truth, not to be harassed by our opinion, but to be able to discern truth. Freedom of speech is necessary to really have positive change.
It sounds like a cliche, but its not. Freedom of expression, (Freedom of speech) no matter how many dumb things we express, is necessary for everybody, because when someone says something of particular interest, others listen and echo his voice. No being politicians! Having no alternate motives other than confirming or adding to something we personaly think is true.
To make evident the problems that we perceive, permits dialog with others, enabling us to identify the problems that are common to all and finally to define common objectives. To have truly collective objectives, enables us to ask and demand true representation from our leaders, because, knowing we are not the only ones that think that this or that makes a whole lot of sense, the price of being corrupt becomes very high.
Guatemala is where it is because we Guatemalans fear saying what we think. We always try to say what others want to listen, what is convenient to our immediate goals. We have a saying: "One is the owner of ones silence and a slave of one's words". Because we are shy, or we are ashamed, or because we are not entierly sure if what we are saying is totally true. Because if we say the "Wrong Thing" we will be unfairly judged. WELL TO HELL WITH THAT. Freedom of expresión is allot more important.
Rosemberg Evidenced the following: One is also a slave of his silence and the owner of his words.
We are souly responsible in keeping or loosing our freedom of speech. In our being too judgemental or keeping an open mind, our battle between good and evil starts within.
Rosemberg - just 1 "Chapín" (Regional slang for Guatemalan) has lead a nation by example. Because he said something that makes allot of sense to many many Guatemalans. Because he had the balls to say it. And with it, all of us, for now, have lost the fear to speak out. Lets defend the individual.
I do believe Rosemberg paid with his own life, the price of the strenght to say the truth. With his life, we bought and gave all of Guatemala a period of grace where the country could voice their opinions, publicly, without risking ones life.
So in honor of Rosemberg, I say:
I WANT TO SEE THE VERDICT AND I WANT TO SEE THAT THE EVIDENCE OF THAT VEREDICT PROVES BEYOND DOUBT, THE REASON BEHIND THE VERDICT.
Lets not make the STUPID miskate of polarizing the political meaning of Rosemberg's video. Lets ensure the freedom of those who are now judging the evidence, to say what they believe is true. Lets defend freedom of expresion and demand proof to those who judge.
LETS HONOR THE MOST SACRED OF SACRIFICES, DEFENDING A FREEDOM WITH ONES OWN LIFE. LETS HONOR ROSEMBERG DEFENDING THE FREEDOM THAT EVERY INDIVIDUAL HAS TO EXPRESS WHAT HE FEES AND BELIEVES IS RIGHT.
Lets assume the responsibility of keeping his legacy. He has indeed broken the silence. Lets keep voicing what we believe important to declare. Let our actions also speak for us. Lets be honest and concentrate on keeping a constant and real demand for justice. Not just in the rosemberg case, but with everi little corrupt act we see in our daily lives.
From bribes to inner family abuse. It is our responsibility to continue breaking the silence. Lets give de individual the space to say what he has to say. Lets be just when judging people. Lets continue to be the evidence and educating, about the power a people united by their common goals, respecting the individuals right to express himself. Not just united in the safety of one single protest, televised and politicized. But to always have the freedom to demand justice. To demand of some one else the opportunity to prove the validity of our ideas. To give evidence of our own common sense, of what we quiet out of fear, even when, deep inside, we believe we hold the truth.
Let all in give testimony, that Guatemalans today, stand ready to support anyone who seeks help against injustice. Not through the brutality of an angry mob, but by asking for evidence, by securing a space to dialog and by understanding. Being analytical, not visceral.
Thank you to all who have taken the time to write in their opinions, something I needed deeply, in order to write this article. I look forward to your comments.
