Obama vs. McCain, Final Contest
The day in which the United States sets new course is today. Despite apparent democratic victory in the polls, the senator from Illinois, Barack Obama, is steadfast. Everything will be decided today; will the American people support the above-mentioned candidate or the Republican counterpart John McCain?
Guatemala has always been friendly to Republican administrations, basically because of its support of free trade and easy trade access. Back when the DR-CAFTA was being negotiated, many analysts believed that if it had been in the hands of a Democratic administration, the negotiations would have been more rigid in environmental and labor regulations, making the trade requirements more difficult to meet.
Some people asked me, which of the two candidates is a safer choice for the U.S.A? A country that faces restructuring its microeconomics as well as salvaging the ravages of its financial crisis. I answered that electing John McCain would be a safe vote, which might not make it a good or desirable one, but in economic matters, governmental policy would be relatively more stable and congruent to what has been done under the Bush administration, which primarily ensures stability in political decisions partaining to financial markets. Choosing Senator Obama means structural change, which can be beneficial if protected from populist flooding, something that has been handled agresivly in the democratic campaign. Another important factor to whatch out for is making sure that Obama's social support systems are sustainable and sustained with the market economy .
In conclusion, it is not a president but the active work of its people, that will solve America's needs, in its re-emergence as an economic power. It is in this inevitably new period in history, where North Amerca has a last chance to recuperate long lost productivity. Weather it is through new structural change, or conservative faith in the old ways, we are truly looking at one of the most historical elections of our life time.
