Environmental negotiations with Europe
Today, one of the worlds most important subjects revolve around international negotiation is the environment. The preoccupation caused by the improper use of natural resources and its subsequent climatic instability and the reduction of natural resources, have pushed the environmental subject to become the keystone of various international agreements, specially ones based in commercial interests. While in the 70's and 80's, the subject was ridiculed and promoted by only a few, today, with global warming & petrol prices shooting up, the subject is active and present in all social groups. Even groups that openly discredited the subject have now been forced to recognize its importance.
Since the 90's, pioneers like the EU: Germany, France and England had begun to break way for others to follow, defining and bettering environmental quality standards of their regions. The priorities marked by these countries where very clear; solid waste management, water reservoir protection, and renewable energy sources. These three topics continue to be the pillars of environmental policy in the European Union. When it comes to solid waste management, European countries are recognized for their efficient recycling and adequate residue management as well as their work on river preservation, lakes and other water sources. Its necessary to emphasize that developed countries have been working for a while now on the development of renewable energy resources, from hydro, solar, aereo energy, Etc.This is both a benefit in terms of the sustainable use of natural resources as well as a solid help in their present economic system through the oil energy crisis.
It is because of this that environmental issues are going to be key in new international agreements, such as the ones now existing in the Chileyan and Cariforo agreement, as well as others that will be discussed in this blog shortly.
